The part nobody explains

There are two roads to coverage. Patrick checks both.

Most people only ever see one of them. Patrick puts them side by side, so you can see what each one costs and what it actually covers.

Road one

The Marketplace

Pennie, Pennsylvania's official health insurance marketplace.

  • You cannot be turned down because of a pre-existing condition.
  • Tax credits can lower your monthly premium. They are based on household income and size.
  • You enroll during Open Enrollment, Nov 1 to Jan 15, or after a qualifying life event like losing job-based coverage.

Often the right road when someone in the house has an ongoing health condition, or when your income qualifies you for real help with the premium.

Road two

Private health plans

Separate from the Marketplace.

  • Medically underwritten. You answer health questions, and not everyone qualifies.
  • You can apply any time of year, including outside Open Enrollment.
  • They do not qualify for Marketplace tax credits, and coverage differs from plan to plan. Patrick walks you through what is and is not included before you apply.

Worth a look when your household is generally healthy and you do not qualify for much help on the Marketplace.

Two numbers

The monthly premium is only half the story.

What a bad year costs you comes down to two numbers: your deductible and your out-of-pocket max. Move the sliders and see how a big bill splits between you and the plan.

Questions people ask first

What is the difference between the Marketplace and a private plan?
Marketplace plans go through Pennie. They cannot turn you down for a health condition, and they may come with tax credits based on your income. Private plans are separate. They ask health questions, not everyone qualifies, and you can apply any time of year. Patrick checks both.
When can I sign up?
Pennie's Open Enrollment runs Nov 1 to Jan 15. Enroll by Dec 15 for coverage that starts Jan 1. Outside those dates you need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage. Private plans can be applied for any time of year.
I just lost my coverage at work. What now?
Losing job-based coverage usually opens a Special Enrollment Period, so you may not have to wait for November. The window is limited. Call Patrick or take the Coverage Check today.
